RESPECT YOUR ELDERS

The Bible has a lot to say about the elderly, and how we should value the wisdom of our seniors. How we should respect their years of experience. They also offer comfort and assurance during the aging process, reminding individuals that God will sustain us throughout our lives. Several verses advocate for respecting elders, while others celebrate the wisdom gained through length of time they have lived life.

I have listed some examples below, please take to heart how to treat your elderly and if you’re an elder realize your importance to the younger. I like this first one, this is why we should stand when an elderly person comes into the room or to the table.

Leviticus 19:32:"Stand up in the presence of the aged, and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God. I am the Lord."

Proverbs 16:31: "Gray hair is a crown of glory, and it is found by the path of righteousness."

Job 12:12: "Is not wisdom found among the aged? And does not long-life bring understanding?"

This one tells us that if we are old, don’t give up, you still have a lot to give!

Psalm 92:14: "They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green."

God promises us that He will take care of us as we age!

Isaiah 46:4: "Even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save."

Psalm 71:18 So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

Respect your parents and grandparents!

Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Proverbs 20:29 The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair.

This is the one law given with promise, if you respect your parents, you will have a long life!!!

Exodus 20:12 Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

1 Timothy 5:1-2 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;  The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

Proverbs 17:6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

We are to teach our children to study the Bible and how to respect others, especially their elders. Sadly, in this day and age these lessons have not been taught to the youth much. That is the shame of the parents for not teaching them at a young age to respect their elders. God said to teach them!

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Hebrews 12:7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

Young people should take good advice from their elder family members.

Deuteronomy 32:7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.

God tells us to take care of our orphans and seniors.

James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Don’t look back at the past but keep moving forward in your life. Deal with each day that day.

Ecclesiastes 7:10 Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

These verses, among others, demonstrate the biblical perspective on aging, emphasizing both the respect and value placed on the elderly and the assurance of God's continued care and support throughout our life. We can trust God and know He will not leave us when we are old!
